In Stockholm, Audrey Werro delivered the performance of the year. The Swiss runner completed the 800 meters in 1:53.98 minutes – the third fastest time in history and the first real attack on the world record in decades.

In the men's event, 17-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus made a statement: With 1:42.70 minutes, he won against a world-class field including Marco Arop in his Diamond League debut.

Over 1,500 meters, Yared Nuguse confirmed his strong form with 3:30.11 minutes, while Robert Farken made a promising start to the outdoor season with 3:32.99 minutes.

In the steeplechase, Soufiane El Bakkali remained the dominant name. Karl Bebendorf and Lea Meyer directly secured the European Championship standard.

Four days later in Oslo, the level rose even higher.

Over 5,000 meters, the race literally exploded: Addisu Yihune won in 12:47.62 minutes, with ten athletes staying below the previous world best time of the year.

And Cooper Lutkenhaus? He followed up by beating Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi over 800 meters by one hundredth of a second in 1:42.08 minutes.

Perhaps the biggest insight from these two meetings: the supposed "hot takes" suddenly don't seem so bold anymore. The women's 800-meter world record is as vulnerable as it hasn't been in decades. In the men's 1,500 meters, a generation is emerging that can seriously target Hicham El Guerrouj's legendary mark (even if the really big names haven't yet entered the race). And after the 5,000-meter race in Oslo, it wouldn't be surprising if Cheptegei's world record also starts to waver soon. It's only June. But 2026 already feels like a world record year.
