Zurich, Switzerland, July 15, 2024 – Developed at On Labs in Zurich, this technology revolutionizes the upper of performance shoes and marks a new milestone in shoe production and performance.

The new technology is first used in the Cloudboom Strike LS, a high-performance running shoe designed for racing and long distances. The LightSpray™ upper is precisely manufactured by a robotic arm in a fast, one-step and automated manufacturing process. This process creates a one-piece, ultra-lightweight upper that offers exceptional fit and support while minimizing drag and even eliminating laces.

The ultra-thin LightSpray™ upper is precisely sprayed on, fits seamlessly to the foot and has no laces. The result is an extremely lightweight shoe at just 170g that offers a distinctive aesthetic and a completely new silhouette for performance footwear. Once created, branding is added in minutes through a fully automated inkjet printing process that is more sustainable and design flexible. Each shoe is fully assembled in just three minutes. LightSpray™ technology has the potential to revolutionize not only shoes, but all types of wearable products in the sportswear industry.

Focus on sustainability

The LightSpray™ process paves the way for more sustainable production. The fully automated process reduces waste and creates 75% fewer carbon emissions compared to other On running shoes. The process enables faster and more efficient production and offers the potential to produce shoes closer to the customer. By constructing from a single recyclable material and eliminating the use of adhesives, it opens up new possibilities for circular fashion and sustainable products.

The LightSpray™ technology and the Cloudboom Strike LS were developed and tested in close collaboration with elite athletes. Hellen Obiri, four-time world champion and winner of the Boston and New York City Marathons, wore a development version of the Cloudboom Strike LS earlier this year when she won the Boston Marathon again.
